Dublin City Council's new road signage has been given the thumbs down by the Minster for Transport. The signs have been severely criticised as being too complicated, and that one would have to be a mathematician to work them out. Of course Dublin’s Lord Mayor has responded by asking how hard is it to comprehend that 2 follows 1, 3 follows 2 etc :D

So whats all the angry exchanges about then? Lets take a look at some example signage.

Well, they are colourful at least! But what do they mean? Lets see:

Sign 1
You are approaching the outer orbital route at junction 6 leaving town

Sign 2
You are on the outer orbital route at junction 6 going east.

Sign 3
You are approaching the inner orbital route at junction 17 going into town.

Sign 4
You are on the inner orbital route at junction 15 going west.

Was that easy or what? ;)

In Dublin we have two designated ring-roads, or orbital routes, one inner, one outer. To read these new road-signs, one would have to learn every junction and the equivalent numbers on both of these orbital routes. The outer one has 30 junctions to learn, and the inner one 40, that’s 70 junctions in all!!

So what do you think of the new signs? Are they helpful, or a hindrance to motorists?

It must be a SIGN of the times, and if you think that joke was bad, you would be right, just like those signs.

I wonder what they smoked before dreaming up that sh!t.

Those signs are something alright! as if driving in town wasnt traumatic enough! I drove into town for the first time last week a peak hour and its not something I'd do again in a hurry! I like to think I'm a confident enough driver but when 3 lanes suddenly merge into 2 without warning such as roadsigns and there's a bus lane in the middle of it just for good measure it makes you wonder why there arent' more accidents in town!those new signs should see to that though - did u see the pix on the news of people having to stop and turn around in the middle of O'Connell street? Thats really going to help ease traffic!
