possible trouble?

Hi to all,

I have a 2.5l Ford Transit diesel, I was away on holidays for a couple of weeks and when I started it up yesterday and today it gave a bit of a squeek from the fan belt that it never had before.

Worse still is while cranking the engine from cold it stops turning sometimes and I get that horrible sound you get when your engine has started but you don't release the key.

Could these two be related?

You will always get that horrible noise on any vehicle, when you turn the starter motor while the engine is running. This should not be done, as it damages the engine.

When was the van last serviced? Was the van outdoors while you were away on holiday?

Yes the van was outdoors while I was away.
As for the horrible noise, the engine is still cranking when it happens!
