I got a 1988 GMC Jimmy. Real nice girl. But got a little problems two days ago. Alternator died. No prob. I got a spare one.
But, I'm a girl so I'm not that strong and I can't see through my left eye, so I asked a friend who is studying to become a mechanic to get the drivebelt out for me so I could change the alternator.
He told me he did. I changed the alternator and everything is fine. But... when I try to put the drivebelt back I noticed that it doesn't fit! All the poles are in their rightful place! My friend NEVER LOOSE THE TENSOR!
Now the REAL problem is... where is the tensor in my Jimmy? All I know is that is suppose to be a 5/8 square hole so that I can fit one of my tools. But where is it? Near what? Beside what?
I'm having an awful time searching for it. Could someone give me some advice? Without the drivebelt I can't move her to a mechanic and I live really far away and my friend doesn't have a car.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Bany,

The Tensor?I suppose you mean the belt tensioner. I have't heard of the tenso yet!!!

If you're talking about the belt tensioner it is usually spring loaded. So when you try to wrap the belt around it, you have to try and push against tension to loosen it up and fit the belt.

The belt tensioner is essentially a spring loaded arm, with a pulley at one end.

It should be located along the same lines as the alternator and A/C compressor. Look for a diagram on sticker that shows you where the belt should be routed through. This diagram will show you the location of each component includung the belt tensioner.

Good luck
