I am proud to announce the birth of another Irish Motoring Site - www.driftirl.com

This site was started by a group of rear wheel drive ethuasists to help promote drifting and the associated sports. Drifting as you will find out is not just a sport to some it is in fact a way of life. It is a love of going sideways for as long as possible and showing the drivers car control. Speed is never a factor for drifting unless you are a D1 Drifter - it's all about control poise and style...

Xtreme Promotions and DriftIRL.com Press Release

Super Sideways Sunday - The 1st Round of Ireland's Drifting Championship

Xtreme Promotions has brought together the Uk Drift Team - and Synchronized Drifting with the first round of this years Irish Drifitng Championship. The big news is that some serious Jap Drifters will be present - these guys are from Japan's finest drift club Option Motorsport. Two of these guys Kiki and Nana are running Top Secret Nissan 200Sx's. Oh and yes they will be out doing their thing out on track during the day.

This event is to be run at Tipperary International Raceway in Rosegreen, a track familiar to anyone that attended last years one off event. If you weren't at last years event check out the Gallery for some shots of it.

This season's Championship will be divided into two Categories Novice and Advanced. The full series is to be over five events starting with this one. No restrictions are been placed on Engine Size , but your car will need to be roadworthy to enter. Your car will undergo a number of inspections on the day. The days schedule will allow a practice run before the competition kicks off in earnest, so your best bet is to get thier early and get your practice in so your familiar with everything.

Cheers

Sounds like a bit of a subsidiary you’ve spawned yourself there Junior. Heh, no forum yet? All WIP I suppose ;)

Seriously though, how popular is drifting in Ireland? And by that, I mean do we have any serious drifters?

Did many people attend the drifting event last year?

It's one part of a three site family the third is sttill very much w.i.p

Last years event I think we had in the region of 30 - 40 cars at rosegreen. We had everything from AE86's - 200Sx's - M3's - 3000 GTO - Skyline GTS and a Lotus Carlton. Drifting I can see becoming more and more popular - we've always had a cult following of the AE86 here. And it really is a great fun form of motorsport- that doesn't actually feel like motorsport with all it's rules and regulations.

With all of these events you are judged by a panel of other drivers - not by how fast you go - it's all about style and commitment to going sideways :) It's nice to be regonised by your peers as a good driver - your car doesn't make you a good drifter.

There are a few boys from Waterford that would be serious drifters - Richie Lavin [200Sx] - Ian Coyne [M3/AE86] - Sean New [AE86] - Robbie Thornton [3000GT] from Wicklow - Mark Luney [Carlton 3000Gsi/ Lotus Carlton] from the North would be another well recgonised drifter.

I hope to be out on track this year myself for the full 5 event series in the M3 ....

Got you interested yet ?

Junior,

Kiki and Nana are the same person.

Somsak Nana (head of option motorsport uk) is known as Kiki to his friends.

However (confusingly) there is another drifter called Non (full name completely unpronouncable ... but begins with a P!), who drifts an Option Motorsport prepared S15.
