I have a 91 Golf and it has started to loss power and jerk along sometimes. It usually does this that the end of a trip and my battery and oil light comes on. This does not happen for very long and the car has only actually stopped once and restarted fine. What could be my problem and will I be able to fix it myself. I don't want to take the car in as I am sure they will find nothing wrong with it as it is not doing it all the time.

I had a similar problem on a 99 golf and after a long search it turned out to be a dirty butterfly valve on the carburettor, if you remove the air filter you will see the valve, get someone to step on the accelerator in order to open the valve and then clean the valve, what is actually happening is that oil is condensing on the cold valve and causing it to stick, thus depriving the engine of much needed air .
Hope that helps...............

Guys,
I hate to rain on anyone's parade, but neither the 99, nor the 91 Golf has a carburettor. They are both fuel injected.
Bonzer, not being too hot on modern cars, I'm not completely sure what you're describing, but it sounds to me like an AFM (Air Flow Meter). This tells the ECU how much air is flowing into the engine, and from this the ECU can work out the optimum amount of fuel to inject into the clyinders.

Mine is doing the same thing, i have listed some possible scenario and solutions here, http://ajmerphull.com/vw/vw.html
I have changed the ECU relay but this has not solved the problem, i have been advised to check the fuel relay and the ignition switch.
My cousin had a similar problem with his 1.8i Mk3 which turned out to be the coil.
