Hi there, im not yet having a problem but i think i will be having one it a couple of days. I have a 1983 (A) Vauxhall Nova 1.2L Saloon.
I have just ordered a 230wrms x 2 amplifier for my sound system and from what i can gather my alternator or battery will not be powerful enough to cope with this amplifier. I have been led to believe that my headlights and other lighting will dim during loud music and i have two questions:

1: Will i need a new alternator OR a new battery (heavy duty). At present i have the OEM alternator which i believe is between 45 to 55 amps.

2: If i do need a new alternator then would this one fit:

That alternator is off a H reg 2 litre Vauxhall Astra Gte Mk2. If that will not fit then can you recommend one for me? I have no idea how many amps i would need but i would imagine it would need to be at least 60 amps? If i dont need an alternator but a battery then obviously 2: onwards can be ignored.

Thank you for your time.

Yes, the lights will dim, the battery won't be completely charged, and eventually one morning, you won't be able to start the car.

What you need to do, is get a battery with the maximum reserve capacity for the size that will fit in your engine compartment.

Also, what you need to do is get an alternator that's a good 75+ amps. The one that you have posted above, does not mention anything about amperage, so i would avoid it.

Good luck

Thanks for the quick reply...

I have mailed the guy selling that alternator just to see if he knows the amperage. I have had a look around and by the looks of it, it could be 70 amps as this site suggests:

I will go and see what type of batteries I can get in there and take a visit to the local scrappy to see if i can find any other alternators.

Cheers again..
