Golf '99, 'flat spot' when accelerating

I have a problem with my golf. When I accelerate particularly in lower gears there's no pick up for a few seconds and then it kicks in. Also when I put my foot down I can hear a clunk noise from either underneath the car or in the engine some where.

Any idea what it might be and how much to fix?

Is it just me or a large number of posts on this forum are VW related?!!!

At any rate any number of things could be wrong with your engine. The fuel injection system may have a clog in it. The ignition timing may be off (this is very important) and/or the valves may have too much or too liitle gap.

I would say a proper tune-up can detect and fix most of these symptoms.
