Car wont Start!

I wonder if there is someone here who can help me! I have a H reg Escort L 1.4(old shape) and it's been sitting up my driveway for about a year now, as I am trying to pass my test. I usually start the car up and let it run for a while to keep it ticking over. The problem is, I had left it for a couple of months and it obviously wouldn't start even when jumped, so I bought a new battery and it started up fine. I then left it another month with out starting it's now dead again. A friend managed to jump start it and gave it a run around our block, but when he brought it back we left it running an hour and then when we tried starting it up on it's own, it wont have any of it! I know it's my own fault for neglecting it, but I do want to sort the problem out and wondered if there is anything I will need to do or buy to fix this. It starts up fine when jumped, but will never start up on it's own! Someone suggested to me that I may need a new started motor? But since I have no knowledge of car mechanics, I dont even know what one is!
