Right Guys and Gals, here is the next one:

See what you think of this one. Apologies for the size of the pic, but if I make it smaller the resolution goes haywire...

The back reminds me of an old Peugeot! It kind of looks French. Am I close?

I think I know which peugeot you mean, the 304 coupe, but I am afraid it's not the one Whiplash. It's also not a French car...

Do we start leaning toward Italy and Maserati perhaps???. Is that an Italian or Swiss front No. Plate. I like the Swiss reg Mercs in the background (not to mention the Jaguar and possibly a DKW??).

Well Citroman, you have done your 'homework'. You've got all the other cars in the pic correct, because there are two Mercedes 190SL's, a Jaguar MK2 and indeed a DKW in the background. If you've really got good eyesight you can actually see the rear tail lightcluster of a Jaguar E-type to the left of the DKW :),
however you didn't guess the name of the car in question ;).
Funny you mention Italy. Though it is not an Italian car or a Maserati for that matter, the design IS. The car was designed by Piero Frua in Italy, and to give you another clue, this car has a dual identity. It is known as the make it started out as, but as the factory was taken over, it was also known under another name...

Now that should give you all something to think about!

All right then! Before we start going the geographical route again, I will allready give away that the car is in fact German! Also the company that took over the car was (and still is!!!!) German...

Right, that should do it...

I'm afraid it's not an NSU or Audi.

To give you another clue, here is the backend of the 'later' make car. See if you can make out some more clues from this pic

I think its a BMW. Judging by the rear lamps which are similar to the 2002 touring. I know BMW had a connection with FRUA for the (I think) 3.0 CSi.

But I dont know what the deal is with the "Take over" though. Go on tell me I'm right!!!

Well I knew there was a Frua connection with BMW on some other car but couldn't remember which, thanks for the info.

I remember coming across the name Glas previously but I would never have connected the picture and the name.

Well Becos, you are right. The car in the 2nd photograph, i.e the 2nd incarnation of this car is indeed a BMW! The BMW 1600GT to be precise.
However, the orginal mystery car in its 1st guise is the Glas 1300GT/1700GT.

The "Glas" company was a German company building low budget, boring cars for mostly their own market. However, in the early sixties they developed a lovely little engine which was screaming out for a sporty bodywork. They went to Italy and contracted Piero Frua to design them a little coupe version. He did an excellent job as the car looks really well when it came out in 1964. It wasn't only looks as the tiny 1300cc engine threw out 85bhp with a top speed of about 170km/h (105mph) which wasn't bad at all for the time. In 1965 the engine was joined by 1700cc engine with even better performance.
In 1967 BMW bought the "Glas" company, and they completely reworked the little coupe. They replaced the engine, suspension and other mechanical parts with their own bits and pieces and the car was now called the BMW 1600GT. Performance was the same as the 1700GT.
Somehow the public never really got interested as they would still consider the car a Glas and even with the BMW badge, they couldn't be tempted. There were about 5000 glas coupes sold, and only a 1000 BMW coupes.

By the way Becos, you mention the liason between BMW and Frua through the 3.0CSL, but this is incorrect. The Frua-BMW connection was only through the Glas buy out. Glas has another Coupe in the collection when BMW bought the company, the Glas V8, which was reworked by BMW and called the BMW 3000. So the connection with Frua was more or less indirectly. Bertone (or Guigario to be precise) designed the BMW 3200CS. The actual 2000CS and 3.0CS model ranges were styled by Wilhelm Hofmeister, a German designer, but he did use a lot of the design cues from the 3200CS.
