There's a voltage regulator that in some cases is embedded inside the alternator, and in some cases it is located outside. It can cause irregularities if it is not working properly. If you can confirm that it is not embedded in your alternator, then I would have it checked.

Other than that, I can't think of much right off the top of my head at this moment. I'm sure there are other possible causes. Maybe larsen_huw can throw in some ideas.

Well i've just come back off my hols, so appoligies for the late reply.

Electrics aren't my thing ..... i don't trust electricity ..... bit of an old fashioned luddite in that respect! :)

Only thing i can add to rivolette is a problem that i had on my Capri. The plug that plugs into the back of the alternator might have come loose ..... this happened to me, causing an intermittent connection. This was fine under most conditions .... but wasn't able to deliver enough electricity under high load conditions.

However, if you've replaced the alternator already (and i assume the job was carried out by someone who knew what they were doing) then they should have plugged the alternator in properly when replacing it.
