All (good) advice greatly appreciated!

I was just out to lunch at the Morgue in Templelogue and during a conscientious moment reversing to let some bugger out who had driven thru the car-park in the wrong direction I scratched the side of my car along a bollard

He didn't even say thanks (sorry I'm ranting now!)

The back of my wing mirror and the door have scratches on it and I'm not sure if it's the white paint from the horrible bollard or if most of the damage is actually to my car. My friends told me to try nail polish remover on the car to see if any of the bollard paint comes away but I'm afraid to do this incase it affects the car paint. I was more thinking along the lines of going thru the car wash to see what the damage looks like then and deciding what action to take next.

If it turns out to be scratches what's the best thing to do and is it possible to have the car looking perfect again?

I never realised how annoying it is to get a mark on your car - it is not dented but it looks ugly with the white marks along the door and on the mirror.

Thank you all kindly.

Elena

With friends like those..... who needs enemies?? Don't even think about nail varnish remover as you might damage the car ten times worse than it is. Car Wash won't help either!

Its very difficult for me to suggest anything without seeing the damage. It might be colour from the bollard or it might be a scratch. Here are the only two things I can say here: Try a magnifying glass to look at it up close and personal. You should be able to see the difference between car paint bollard- paint. Or else try get your hands on some car polish. Autoglym Paint Renovator might be some help in removing the bollard paint (if that's what it is).

If you want me to look at it, let me know. Bollard paint would be easy to remove with paint correction clay and it would just take a few minutes. I removed hammerite from a car that had been driven too close to a driveway gate a few months ago. Looked fine afterwards.

Hi Brian,

I appreciate your reply. The good news is I think it's only paint and there are no scratches to the car. I washed it vigorously with warm soapy water last night and most of the paint came away, there are just a few speckles here and there so I will try what you suggest and I'll let you know how I go.

By the way...nail varnish remover indeed!!! Thank God I didn't heed them!!

Thanks a million!

Hi Brian,

I washed it vigorously with warm soapy water last night and most of the paint came away...

I hope that wasn't Fairy washing up liquid, Brian would be terrified to hear that! Not quite as bad as nail polish remover, but even still...

Anyhow, glad to hear the damage was minimal.

PS, I know the Morgue, hope that wasn't a liquid lunch you had before the incident! :D

Its not that bad, Whiplash. Mainly just removes wax and leaves the paint exposed to the weather, etc. A good wax up solves that problem.

Its good to hear the damage isn't too bad then, Elena. And hopefully it won't happen again!

Take care.
