I have a problem with my 98 Megane. I changed my headlights for the white/blue lights and pulled out a wire by mistake. This wire I think is for the spotlamps which was routed through a second relay. as i didn't know where it went i took it out. however now any time i brake the fog light on the dash lights up. Also when I'm indicating and brake the indicator speeds up. This was also happening before i completely disconnected the cable. Any ideas???
i hesitant to go to a garage in case i get charged a fortune

Unless you can find someone on these boards who had had the exact same problem with the exact same car, I doubt that anyone would be able to help you out. You could possibly look at another 98 Megane if a friend or a family member has one.

Although I don't imagine a mechanic would charge you much to fix it. Good luck!

I am the person on this board with the exact same problem with the exact same car! ;)

I have the same problem, in as much as when I brake the foglight indicator on the dash lights up. Also, when the headlights are on, if I indicate right, the brake lights and indicator flash out of sync with each other and go at a mad speed. Even more odd is the fact that the high level brake light is on with the indicator, then the main brake lights are on on their own. And I also have a 98 Megane. A 1.9dTi RT Sport.

Did you manage to fix this problem? I'd be grateful of any assistance.

Just connect that cable through a 10A fuse to the vehichle chassis or another earth cable, do not attempt it without fuse!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bacause one of your bulbs has lost an earth, when you brake you are drawing an earth through another bulb to feed your defective light and by doing this you are creating a magnetic field in the second bulb making it light,

Carry out my instructions and you will find that thingd should br ok.

Also with these cars, they create this kind of problem without any wires pulled out, if you remove the connector block from the rear lights then look into the female connector with vehichle wiring loom atached you will see that one of the 5 or 6 terminals has gone wide and overheated, this is your problem!!!!

To remedy this, you cannot buy a repair kit from renault, what i do is pull out the damaged terminal and solder 4 inches of cable to the corresponding pin on the bulb holder, now slide this 4" cable through the hole of the terminal that you pulled out and push connector block home firmly.

Now strip the cable that the damaged terminal is on and use connector to join the two.

Make sure that you do the both rear lamps.

Bobs your uncle.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll have a look at it tonight if I get the time and let you know how I get on. I was moving house over the weekend, so the car was kind of on the back burner... ;)

Finally a follow up.

The problem had got so bad that, with the headlights on and the indicator flashing, when I applied the brake the indicator ceased to function. This is rather dangerous so me and my girlfriend's father spent a few minutes fixing the problem.

We dismantled the lights and sure enough the connectors had overheated and there was some blackening on the pins and also on the female bit ;) This was cleaned up with a needle file, the metal parts bent a bit to make a better contact and the whole reassembled. It works fine!..... for now.

Next time it fails I'm going to hardwire the whole thing up, bypassing the connector block (which is clearly at fault). Does anyone think this is a bad idea?

Thanks again for your help.

I know another guy on this forum who had the exact same problem with Megane electronics and I think it was a 98 aswell. He solved the problem by buying a Honda Accord. ;)

Phil,

I'm thinking of a similar solution myself... ;)

Well, I've got an E34 535 and I'm only using the Migraine to save money. Mind you, the lights have behaved perfectly so far...

So, to reiterate, it seems that dismantling the rear light units and cleaning the contacts (even filing off the molten plastic ;)) has solved the problem. Thanks again to boss for explaining what the problem was and how it might be fixed. Maybe I'll spend the sixty quid I saved (two sets of new rear lights) on my old Beamer! :)
