I have a 1999 Renault Magane Scenic.I bought the car 18mts ago and have always found it a bit sluggish although the car goes well.In cold weather it sometimes chugs but when it warms up there are no problems. The car has been serviced and when this was mentioned to the mechanic he stated it would be best to have a Renualt dealer check it out as it appears to be a faulty temp sensor.I thought I would have it checked before winter again.
Had it checked-- Dealer says it requires a head gasket? @ £950. There is no overheating,no water loss, no real problems, no sign of water in the oil, does this sound right?
Does anyone have any ideas ?
I would ask the dealer why he says head gasket required.
Did he do specific test or is it a known problem (I've not heard of it) or is it just an opinion of a mechanic.
Would suggest a couple more opinions if thats the case, most good garages know this engine well enough and if needed should be a lot cheaper than that! Probably by about half!

The car being going fine, no problems I just wanted the thing checked before winter. The dealer stated that it would require a new water pump, gasket, bolts, timing belt (Changed some 2000miles ago).
The car is drivingbthe same as it has been since I got it 18mts ago.
Thanks for your reply
What engine is it (size?) and type (if known) 16valve or 8 valve etc.

The dealer told you it needs a timing belt which you say was replaced 2000 miles ago? I'd say they're taking you for a ride. Get a second opinion. Sounds like they dealer saw you coming!
