Hi All,

First post here, so here goes...

Recently purchased a Renault Espace 2.2 TD RXE (2000 W Plated). On bringing the car home noticed a few of things. Firstly we were told that the Airbag Picture and the word SERVICE, indicated that the on board Diagnostics were checking the Airbags, on closer examination of the manual it appears that this sequence indicates a fault in the Airbag system (but more on that later).

Secondly I noticed that I was returning a value of 99.9 mpg all the time. Now I know that it's a diesel and all, but 99.9 mpg is a little on the extravagant side. I also notice that the range to next fill up mileage sits at around 1500 miles when the tank is full (which would also be nice if it were true :)).

Thirdly and most worryingly I noticed on our first long trip in the car that the front washers weren't working, bear in mind that this car came from a dealer with a just carried out and valid MOT certificate and that front washers are an MOT requirement.
When the front screen is washed the pump can be heard to run and water sprays out of the REAR wiper. When the rear screen is washed the pump can be heard to run and the water sprays out of the REAR wiper.

Now the questions.

1) The Airbag error codes (as returned by a Bosch diagnostic set) are roughly (can't remember the exact words) Error 101 - Can't remember the error description and Error 111 - Something to do with the Airbag system not being coded to the vehicle?. Does anyone have any idea what these mean? and how to resolve them?

2) How do I get the MPG and Range system working? any ideas where I might check for leads off (I am kinda assuming that a flow meter isn't working somewhere)

3) What should I do about the washers I seem to be getting water out of the rear regardless of which screen I wash, Is there a switching valve that re-routes the water to the front and that may be stuck?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Chargenut,

The whole thing sounds to me like it is a major electrical glitch going on with the car. Are you sure this vehicle has not been in some kind of a major accident or water damage? Those 2 can screw the electrical system up pretty good.

And before you purchased the vehicle, was the airbag warning light coming on and staying on? How about the rear washer? Was that also faulty prior to purchasing the vehicle or did these problems show up after the fact?

It's tough to pinpoint what exactly is causing it, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the car may have been involved in some major crash or perhaps water damage. Of course these are theories but nevertheless.
