I have a 1999 VW Polo 1.4 Match..
This mourning i was moving to the pavement to let an oncoming car pass on a narrow road when the engine cut out, the steering seemed to lock (almost as if the steering lock had engaged) the oil light came on and a regular beeping noise could be heard....
I had not travelled far (50-60 ft)....

Does anyone have any idea what this is should i be worried about it....

Thanks

Were you able to restart the car easily? Was there any unusual noises when restarting the engine? Also how many miles do you have on the vehicle?

Yes it started up again fine, and drove to work (30 mins) with no problems, as for mileage i'd have to check... it had its last service in febuary

Do you have power steering?

If so, the reason your steering felt as if it locked up was the power steering pump is driven off the engine ... no engine = no power steering = very heavy steering.

The oil light will come on becuase the electrics are still on, but the engine isn't ... so there won't be any oil pressure, but there will be electricity to read the fact there isn't any oil pressure. :)

As for the regular beeping noise, it'll be a warning of some sort.

If it started up and ran fine after that, then there probably isn't an immediate problem ... although if it starts happening on a regular basis it should be looked at.
