I have a new model Opel Astra (late June 2004) 1.4 hatchback and I'm having bother with the CIM unit.

The CIM unit is a module which controls a lot of the electronics in the cabin (indicators & airbags to name but two) and is located in or near the steering column. I have had a lot of trouble with the CIM unit in the car. It has been replaced 3 times so far. One time they replaced the ignition module also after the car completely failed to start at all.

The CIM unit is gone again and I put it in again for another new CIM unit. The car is only 14 months old (albeit with nearly 41,000 miles on the clock). This would be the 4th CIM unit to be fitted in 14 months. Opel have come back to me saying they wont be replacing this part as they say it will just go again.

They want to figure out the problem, fix the part and then replace it with a part that wont go again. This will take 6 to 8 weeks according to the Opel customer care guys ... I'm in a rental car for the mo which I demanded as I dont consider the car to be safe while this fault is in the car and not being fixed ... I have lost all confidence in the astra ....

How should I approach this situation?
Should I wait until they come back to me - Its been over 3 weeks already?
Should I look for a new car or refund?
Do I have any rights at all?

Has anybody out there any idea why this might be happening or whether they have had the same trouble or heard of anybody else with the same part giving up the ghost.
