Bike Licenses ??

I a pal of mine here in work has just informed me that in Ireland now on your first provisonal licence you can get up a 300 cc bike and on your second provisonal any cc .. anybody like to comment on the idea of an 18 year old being able to get a GSXR1100 legally on the road ..

It's been like that for ages, only worse. In Norway, you used to be able to go from a 2.5hp moped directly onto a 100hp+ anyhting you want at the age of 18. Now, the EC demand that you must have ridden a 33hp bike for at least two years or be over 21 to ride unlimited bikes. It's just that nobody ever gets mature enough to ride a 180hp 200mph missile. And if they do (mature enough), they don't need it because you cannot ever use that power safely on the road. Only on a track could you ever hope to put 180hp to good use reasonably safely.
