View Full Version : Kawasaki 454 LTD
This is for Erik/Ballyman and all who know about bikes.
Any opinions on the above bike? I have bought a 1985 model (US import) for use as a w/end runaround for the summer.

I'll come back later tonight when I have more time on my hands. Solid enough scooter.

Introduced in 1985, the engine was basically a GPz900R unit cut in half and with the cam chain moved to the centre of the engine. Chain final drive was replaced by a belt - the best compromise of all IMO (Lighter than a chain and significantly lighter than a shaft, clean and silent as a shaft, more durable than a chain). The model was soon replaced by a 500cc version, which featured basically the same engine as the GPz500S. And of course the latter engine was a bored and stroked version of the 454 LTD.
Performance was surprisingly good for its size, even as a cruiser. Even more surprising was the handling - the 454 LTD is one of the few bikes to handle on par with basic street bikes. The suspension was also comfortable, yet controlled, and seating position for the driver was more than acceptable. Which could not be claimed for the pillion - a place for kids at best.
The 454 will do well as a solo tourer thanks to low vibration level, strong pperformance and low fuel consumption. Just leave the partner at home - or on their own bike.
Expect many years of dependable service.
Thanks for the info Eirik. As you may have guessed I don't know much about bikes. Had an old 125 years ago and now in my 34th year have splashed out. As for the pillion passenger, she refuses point blank to entertain the idea - her loss.
I actually drove the LTD on a somewhat regular basis in the US back in 1985, my boss over there gave me the use of his.
When I saw this one advertised, I couldn't resist the trip down memory lane.
With the summer coming I have now moved from 4 wheels to 2 and am enjoying every minute of it. As you know yourself, it's another world on a bike.

I had one of these Kwackers a few years ago and can honestly say they were one of the better Japanese bikes.
Best of luck.
