Couldn't agree more about the 156 V6 v 318i debate, but I kinda like the 200bhp+ feeling, which tends to limit you to RWD or 4WD (except for the dreadful Saab 9-3 Viggin, or Aero, or Maxpower, or whatever it is).
Classic cars are for waxing and taking out on nice days on short runs in the sun, IMHO, but then I haven't ever run one as a real everyday car (because I don't want to), but I admit ignorance of day to day experience of (say) a 1970's Maserati as my only transport (thank God) and am willing to be informed/corrected by someone who has, except criteria related to active/passice safety

Well active/passive safety issues are one serious thorn in the side for classic car potential buyers, and one which needs considerable scrutiny. It's probably the only thing that will/might stop me buying one.
However where do you draw the line, I mean some cars are available with 6 air bags but mine only has one....should I get rid of an unsafe car?!!

For the money of an ordinary MG B, you can find lots of other more practical and exiting Classics. BMW 2002tii, Fiat 124 Spider, Alfa Romeo 2000GTV or spider, or Porsche 911 (Yes, for the money you pay for an excellent MG B Roadster, you can park yourself in a 911 lefthooker!!) I know what I would go for!
how much for a good Alfa 2000 GTV

Toad, problem with the 2000GTV is that they only came out in 71, which means you will need to pay VRT. I can get you a very good 1971 Silver metallic lefthooker for exactly 7,000. This would be including transport, registration, etc etc, but without the VRT unfortunately.
If you go for an Pre-70 car, like a 1300 or 1600GTJ, you will pay between 5,000 and 7,000, but then you won't have to pay VRT and the tax is only 27 pounds.
The best of the Alfa 105's to go for however is the 1750GTV, the purest of them all. For this one however, you will need to bring between 7 and 9,000.
If you need more info, give me a shout
