<FONT face="Comic Sans MS">I've started to notice that my cars perfomance drops noticeable off coming close to service time (for the unfamiliar it's a 1.4 97 mk 3 Golf). It's only recently started experiencing Motorway driving, and I feel at times when accelerating that it's fiercely underpowered (in comparision to what I'm used to with the car not in comparision to a lambo or anyfing else) I'll be servicing her myself this time is there any reason why a car should lose the guts of 12mph off it's top speed or start increasing in fuel consumption ?
Any tips for increaing power ? (wiff out engine transplants or anniefing else drastic) ?

Junior,

Change Oil, Oil Filter, plugs, Fuel Filter, Air Filter.
If that doesnt work, send it to a car tune up place - ie McNamara's or Aidan Berminghams in Dublin

Golfs are really known for running out of tune.

They usually charge about £40 for a tune up.
