Was this around Easter by any chance? The boys in blue pull out the stops around the big weekends. Other than that, you will be very unlucky to get stopped for speeding or any other traffic offense.

Sounds like this guy is from the North. Northerners tend to show little regard for traffic rules in the Republic one way or the other.

Drivers from the north are always getting away with motor related fines down in the Republic. Only a very small number of northern drivers who get fined down south actually cough up. It’s not only speeding they get away with, but parking fines too. One town, near the border, that gets a lot of northern cars illegally parked, got tired of fining such drivers and not receiving the fine. They have now introduced clamping, and so the driver has to pay an on the spot fine to have the clamp removed - an effective deterrent indeed. Now how could they tackle the speeding issue? Maybe an on the spot fine should be just that, pay it on the spot, either by cash or credit card, just like the clamping.

Or what about penalty points? They already have that system up the north, and I hear that its about to be introduced some time soon in the south. Sure why not make the points systems interchangeable? What I mean is that no matter where you hale from, north or south, it wouldn’t matter where the finable act took place, it would still affect your own points tally, bringing in yet another effect deterrent.
