My wife Lancer, 1.6 GLXi, sometimes when hot ticks over very badly. It bearly keeps going at 500rpm approx. The next time it will tick over smoothly at 800rpm.
Any suggestion apart from the basic's??
I've checked a few things but I'll wait for your replies to see if I get any new ideas.

Hmm try getting her a scooby <grin>
Have you tried adjusting the Idle tick over yourself ?
Does this happen when it's hot or cold ?
Does she used the same fuel as the scooby ?
Fuel Filters when were they last changed ?

Ans 1 Yes.
Ans 2 Hot, when cold & fuel en-ficher is operating al is OK
Ans 3 Yes buy all Petrol in Texaco on Summerhill :D
Ans 4 Not in quite a while, I'll get one a try it.... never thought og it, thanks:D
The next Scoobie in my yard WILL BE a TURBO, no imatations..... neither is my present scoobie.
BTW can any sensors cause this fault. I'm suspecting the sensor in the CAT

Yeah the oxygen sensor can cause irregular idle but you'd have to replace it to find out.
When you put on the heated rear screen does the idle go up or down?. This should indicate whether the idle circuit is working properly. Maybe you should run a can of injector cleaner through it!!!

I'll try the injector cleaner stuff.
When I turn on the rear window heater it dies more. I guess the sensor is most likely bad?? Where is this located??? In the exhaust downpipe??

Yeah JoshB it is in the downpipe and you should see it without getting underneath. If you are removing it be sure you don't strip the threads or you're buggered!!!

Today I serviced my wife’s Lancer 1.6 GLXi. On Dtroy's advice I purchased a new fuel filter, £28. Easy to change I thought. An hour later, with sweat pouring off my brow I had it changed L. It was located behind the air intake manifold &fuel injection rail. Also the fact it was never changed before did not help opening them bolts. Obliviously this was an item put onto the car before the engine was inserted when built by them nice people in Mitsubishi  Thankfully I had parked the car in the garage the previous night as petrol leaked all over then place when changing it. I had various items around to collect any stray fuel but it was impossible to get it all. So on I continued changing oil & oil filter, air filter & plugs too :D All now going well & I just got called for dinner :smoke:
After dinner I got a bright idea…. time to change the brake fluid too…. DOT4 where did I leave it ;) When I opened the cap of the reservoir it looked like tar. I drained all the old stuff out & took off one front wheel at a time to get proper access to the bleed valve & to squeeze in the caliper, in order to remove ALL old fluid. An hour later all done :d Now, my brain was in overdrive, time to change the hydraulic clutch fluid, again the fluid was like tar. Jasys that’s only 5 min’s work. 20 minutes it took. I got it drained OK, clean it’s reservoir, flushed out the system again & then bled the system. The clutch was engaging to soon, about 2 “ off the floor. I bleed again & again & again. Still the same. Eventually I got my wife out to press the clutch & hold it down while I opened the valve. A massive bubble of air came out, I closed it, she pumped a 2nd time…. perfect the clutch was back to normal :D
Moral of the story:
One person can change brake fluid but clutch fluid needs 2 people, IMHO
BTW Changing the petrol filter, new plugs & slightly adjusting the ignition timing has all helped the idling of this car….. thanks Dtroy, but it’s still not 100%. The fuel that drained out of the filter was MANKY. I have tried the injector cleaner too but I’m un-convinced of it doing anything, it can’t do any harm either ;)
BTW2 Be Cos do you know the resistance value of an oxygen sensor?
I tried checking it with a multimeter today, on the 200K range, but it displayed OC… open circuit or no connection for the non-electronic types :d I drove the car with it dis-connected, made no difference when driving but when I went back over the pit & re-connected it the car idled badly
Josh did the car idle badly withe the sensor disconnected??
If not then that sensor could well be the problem

when the sensor was disconnect & the engine was hot it idled fine, approx 800rpm. On re-connecting the sensor it definitely idled rougher. Altough changing the fuel filter & plugs & timing has helped somewhat it's still not correct.... I'm guessing a new sensor for Mitsubishi.... I cannpt buy a spurious one :p

Glad to be of assistance .. so it looks like a call to Bolands is order eh ?

Does anyone know if this sensor is faulty or dis-connected will it make the car heavier on fuel??
i disconnected it on the Impreza & it is accelerating & responding to the accelerator much better.... any harm in the long term???

I'd just like to say thanks to all for their suggestions on this matter. After the service, changing fule filter & putting the injector cleaner fluid into the petrol the car is now idling & running fine :D
