No? Well then you haven't lived!

Well there's a project currently writing a similar game, but this one's in cool 3D!

If you 1) Like games 2) Don’t want to pay for them 3) Are into multiplayer games 4) Consider yourself a commendable spaceship captain, then you've got to go and check this game out!!! (http://www.parsec.org/)

Only available for Mac and Red Hat (Linux) so far, but Windoze version out soon! :)

I devoted an incredible amount of time to playing Elite, playing on the BBC Micro (remember that?) and then the Amstrad CPC 128 (I'm sure you don't remember that). For some reason, the BBC version had a few extra features, such as the Generation Ships etc. Truly the best game ever, if you don't need instant impact and are prepared to take a longer view. Ther was an Elite II which came out for the PC (I still have it somewhere) but it wasn't nearly as good. I must dig it out sometime, though.

There have been a lot of takes on Elite since then, but I never bothered with many or could get interested enough in the few I did try. I hope thie new one isn't as good as it looks, because i just don't have 35 hours per week for Elite anymore!

Yes Juston, I remember that Amstrad machine! :embarass:

I have to say that Elite really set a new trend for games at the time. I remember playing it on the BBC Micro in town on a couple of occasions, and had it on my Commodore 64. There was just such an atmosphere when playing it, you really were able to travel vast distances through space. And there were several roles you could play. Build up to a great ship with all the best guns and generators and pillage every ship in site, become a bounty hunter, simply trade between the different planets, take on special missions and earn loads of dosh, be a smuggler in arms and narcotics, or for the best thrill all of these together!!

BTW, you can get copies of Spectrum/C64 emulators on the Net for the PC, and download all those old games for free! Other favourites of mine were Commando (fab sound track), Ghost'N'Goblins, Tapper (emm, bear!), Attic Attack (Spectrum - remember that one Phil??), Mission Impossible, Jet Set Willy...ah the list of memories just goes on!

I must check out some of those emulators again...wouldn't mind trying Elite again. BTW Justin, I too bought Elite II, but it turned out to be a crock of ****e compared to the original.

I hadn't thought of looking for an emulator to play Elite...hold that thought, I need to remain employed.

I got to Elite by hanging around outside the exit from Spacestations (armed with Military Lasers, of course) and firing in through the exit and taking out the police ships one at a time as they came out to get you - it was usually possible to take out 20-30 per station before it get too hot, and then you hyperjump out and collect fuel at the sun in the next system, and generally they forgot about your police mass murder next time around, giving you an opportunity to do it again. And then there was the hyperjump thargon ambush, while equipped with a cloak - take out 5-8 at once before your cloak ran out.

Ah those were the days

OK Justin, proceed at your own risk, I'll NOT be held responsible for any addictions (directly and/or/ indirectly) caused by this thread!! ;)

The C64 emulator can be found here. (http://www.computerbrains.com/ccs64)

Elite can be download here (http://www.c64.com/). Simply type Elite into the search box to find the game.

BTW, I forgot one of the most addictive games from the eighties - Boulderdash. BTW, that one's available too! :D

I had forgotten how tiny those little programs were in relative terms - The C64 emulator and Elite downloaded in about five minutes. The graphics are cruddy but... roll on Elite status (again)
