British sports car maker AC has unveiled what it believes will be the world's fastest accelerating production car at the British Motor Show in Birmingham.
Called the AC 212S/C, it combines a very light, yet rigid, F1-style carbon fibre chassis with a 3.5-litre twin turbo engine straight from the Lotus Esprit. AC bosses are claiming it will achieve a four second 0-60mph time, and they say it is capable of breaking the record for being the fastest car from standstill to 100mph and back to rest again.
With a top speed of 155mph, the 212S/C is, according to AC, "attractively priced" at £68,990, in a bid to entice more sales than the struggling Ace has managed. For that money you will receive supercar performance thanks to the twin-turbo V8 Lotus engine that develops 350bhp and drives through a six-speed gearbox. There's power steering as standard and dual circuit ventilated race brake discs are fitted all round. The car's tubular steel ladder spaceframe chassis is clad in a body shape similar to a Cobra, except it's made from carbon fibre and has twin roll-over bars. Despite the plush hand crafted interior using traditional materials like leather and aluminium, the target weight for the 212 is 900kg
