So here we are yet again awaiting Mr. McCreevy's budget for 2001. There’s a lot of talk about both tax rates being lowered by 2% each and a record child care giveaway.

But what about the beleaguered motorist? What can we expect, if anything? Will fuel prices be reduced directly? Will VRT be cut this time around to bring us closer to a Euro standard rate? What would you like to hear from today’s budget?

An important factor that will indirectly affect fuel and the price of new cars is a possible cut of 2% in VAT. Assuming that VRT is calculated AFTER VAT has been levied on the price of a new car (is that correct, anyone???), then this will bring an even bigger saving on new cars purchases, and should indirectly affect second hand prices.

Anyone have inside info or care to comment?

Just caught the end of the budget on the news and if I heard right, its good news for the motorist. Next year unleaded petrol will be 3 pence cheaper.

Am I right. Has anyone else caught the budget?

New Green VRT reduction of 50% for eco-friendly and Hybrid cars is a step unseen.

Slight Increase in Road Tax by between 4 per cent and 6 per cent more from April

Diesel down by 6p
Petrol down by 2.4p

No sign of any movement on home heating fuel which should have helped a lot of people considering how much thats gone up this friggin winter

Yep, you can use this budget calculator on the Irish Times (http://www.ireland.com/special/budget/2001/effect/). It now includes the price reduction in petrol (except it doesn't ask if its diesel or petrol, but defaults to unleaded  )
