..because I am in Hanoi, where red lights, green lights, lines in the centre of the road and speed limits have no meaning at all. You absolutely have to look both ways when crossing a one way street, its like a Road Runner cartoon, where you, the coyote, are trying to cross the road and as soon as you put your foot out, six lanes of motorbikes (with an everage of three passengers and a ladder each) appear out of nowhere and try and kill you. Here, the main rule of the road is that you give way to any vehicle which is big enough to physically crush you - even on your "own" side of the road.
So don't complain, at least you aren't going to be impaled on a ladder by a motorbike - at least at home, when you get a taxi (if you can find one) you don't close your eyes so you don't have to watch what's going on and only imagine that that squealching sound isn't a family of ten on a bike under your wheels. And no-one uses brakes or indicators - why bother when the horn serves perfectly for both pusposes.
