I see that Dublin have yet another QBC this morning. The Tallaght QBC runs from the Square Tallaght, and straight down past the Spawell, through Templeogue, Terenure, Rathgar and on into town.
It's probably great for those people who are brave enough to get the bus into work each and every day. But what about the motorist? I can just imagine the traffic chaos caused by even less roadspace for the beleaguered motorist.
Does this QBC effect anyone? If so what was the traffic like?
Yeah,
That's the route I take every morning. I'm lucky, I don't have to be in work to 10am, but I have had to go along there at 7.30am and it was a bloody nightmare.
You're bumper to bumper and yet there is a clear bus lane beside you. Now the problem starts when every second motorists decides to take the bus lane because traffic is so heavy. They get three quaters way down the bus lane and start forming there own "I'm a clever bas*ard" queue. Now you think this would speed things up, but infact it makes matters worse. Where the bus lane ends in Rathgar you've got two lanes merging into one, because of parked cars. I won't tell you the effect that this causes on the traffic that is queued up in the non bus lane.
So if you follow the letter of the law and do not use the bus lane, you're going to have to a long wait.
I recond that these bus lanes and the introduction of no right turn sign posts that have pop up out of nowhere are the cause of the build up of traffic along this route.
All I can say is, ENJOY IT WHILE YOU CAN BUS LOVERS!!!!!!

This is something that amazes me. Most people from dublin always go straight into work!!! (Let me explain)
I know 2 people from Templeogue who work near me. Both drive into work. Both get onto the main route into town and sit there in traffic until they eventually get into work (about 70 minutes later)
I (bieng the mucker that I am) would rather drive around in circles than sit in traffic. I go down laneways, across streets in through housing estates all just to stay away from the main route. I make it in, in about 20 minutes this morning others 30 :)
Another thing i've learned is that, if your lost in Dublin, or you looking for the best route somewhere, ask a person from the country and you nearly assured that its the best way to go!!
The QBC will be handy, except its not a 2 way thing. It all into town. Not too much provision has been made for getting out! I can imagine what the tailbacks are going to be like on this route from now on!!
Well Done Dub Corp! Another notch on the belt perhaps? When will ye be happy? when its complete gridlock in Dublin?
Or maybe when 1 million people get bicycles and we dont have to pay parking/speeding/clamping fees and dont have to abide by the rules of the road?

I used to use that route myself a while back. I was amazed to see recently that there were indeed no right turns introduced onto the route in question. There were a couple of different routes one could take through housing estates in Terenure which certainly did cut down on the volume of traffic that is experienced on the main artery into the city centre. Without these optional routes, I simply cannot even begin to imagine the traffic chaos in that area now. I suppose that the residents in the effected housing estates are overjoyed with the changes though. I certainly wouldn’t like my house to be located on a rat run.

I'm fortunate to be less than 10 minutes from my job. You guys should buy yourselves some taxi plates and stick a Mannequin in the back of your car. That way you have the bus lane to yourself all the way to work. Heck, you could even pick people up on your way and get an extra 15 sponds and maybe even a tip, just for driving to work!!
Its true about asking a Non-Dub for directions in Dublin. Its usually " go down to Caffreys pub and take a left, then right at McGowans pub and left after O'Dwyres....etc!!" LOL
Just kidding, of course!
Some lessons I did learn when I commuted longer distances to work were: Where the Radio Traffic Report tells you to avoid, head straight for it. Everyone else will be avoiding it. Where you see "Speed Ramps", go for it. It usually means its a shortcut to where you want to get to and they are simply traffic calming measures - so drive calmly! I always left to be in work a half-hour early anyway. I work better in the morning when its quiet and then don't feel so bad leaving at 5 on the dot while everyone is clearing up. Leaving at 5 sharp usually meant getting home in reasonable time. eg. If I left at 5.10, it would add an extra half-hour to the journey.
Having said all that, I hate traffic and I hate work! Roll on the £4 million lotto that I'm way overdue!
