Well I must say that I've read so many different thoughts and opinions on cars over the years. I've seen BMW worshipers, Scooby fans, I've heard many an argument over Alfa 156 Vs BMW 320I, Golf Gti’s, VTEC Hondas etc., and all very entertaining too.

But after the weekend I’ve had it’s all been blown away into a world of worthlessness. When you get to the stage that a M5 is every other BMW then you know there's something wrong in this country. I saw so many M5's, Porsche 911's, Boxsters, Diablos, Ferrari Testarossas, 360 Modenas, ... to be surrounded by such powerful sounding engines, I can definitely tell you it was simply motoring heaven http://www.eforecourt.com/UBB/smoke.gif .

Will this country ever be fair to the enthusiastic motorists, or will Ireland forever be a country that cripples those who want more excitement from their motor? Will we forever have to pay through the nose for such luxuries, or will prices ever be on par with those on mainland Europe? Will we ever have a bite of the cake that others have for so long enjoyed, instead of the odd nibble?

Let’s face it, this country taxes the motorist to the hilt. It's simply a fact of life and we have to put up with it. I'm sure that the Government don't want to loose such a high income that motor sales provide to the exchequer, and I'd imagine they'll pull all the stops to keep the VRT running for as long as possible if the EU ever question it. I’d imagine that the average car in Ireland would be a 1.4 family hatch/saloon, where as in Germany I’d imagine its along the lines of a 2.0 BMW saloon. There’s a fair difference in the quality of motoring between those cars. If all cars were to come down in price in this country then I’m sure no one would complain. After all who wouldn’t like to be driving a bigger and better car then?

But if the VRT on new cars were to be dropped then what would happen to the value of people's current cars? They would also drop and I'm sure people are ****ed off enough with normal depreciation that cars suffer without further erosion.

If I were involved in the motor trade, I would quote the pre-tax price, the tax, and the total, to really show how much tax is being paid.
