My 1994 Jap import Celica is having difficulty passing the NCT on emmissions,
a number of attempts to reduce the CO from 0.5% to 0.3% have failed.
Any assistance greatly appreciated.

What exactly have you done to reduce the emissions ?

I take you used something like some of those pre test additives ? Have you retarded the timing so it doesn't actually burn as much fuel ?

I've heard that using Shell Pura petrol for a few days before the test can help reduce emissions by a minimal amount. This may be of help if used in conjunction with other emission reducing methods.

Retarding the timing wont reduce fuel consumption, in fact it will increase the amount of unburnt fuel, and you definitely dont want to do that.

A '94 Celica shouldn't have a problem passing the test unless its burning oil or the oxygen sensor isn't doing it job properly.

When did you last change the engine oil & filter, air filter etc. ?

Is the car modified at all ?

My guess is that it IS burning oil and that is being picked up. No real short/long term solution for that one, although cleaning out the breather system MIGHT help!

Ahh yes, if it's diesel and you retard the pump timing it wont deliver as much fuel !

Doesn't work on a petrol motor though!

A Toyota main dealer replaced the oxygen sensor (they don't like Jap imports)
with one from a broken Lexus.......could this be my problem?

Car is in great nick so I don't think it is burning oil.

Yes I'd say it IS your problem. Dont spend money anywhere else until you've got a new one of these!
