It's about time VW got the finger out and made a descent version of the Golf. With the Seat Leon Sports boasting 180bhp and 4WD, it made the GTi look very lame indeed.

So here we now have the V6 4Motion, with 6-speed gearbox, and 4WD which VW deemed necessary to handle the extra power. The 4WD system allows torque distribution to alter by up to 100 per cent front to rear. It sports a 2.8 six-cylinder 204bhp engine, capable of 0-62mph of 7.1 seconds, and torque of 199 lb ft at 3200 rpm.

Then we have the looks. There's a few extra cosmetic changes to set it apart from lesser Golf's - V6 badges front/rear, special alloy wheels and twin chrome exhaust pipes.

So has this new incarnation got what it takes? Can the Golf claim back its title of ‘Hot Hatch’?

I will be truly amazed if VW can sell a single car of that model. In the UK it's priced about the same as a BMW 323i, and even ignoring that the BMW is better than anything VW could ever produce, who would spend that money on a VW?

As I have said before, VW had a 225BHp 1.8T available from Audi TT from which they could have produced a serious version of the GTi.

Howevr, they obvioulsy decided to use a different engine and create a luxury cruising machine instead.

While the figures look impressive, the extra engine literage is obviously designed to keep the growl down and allow smoother low-rev manouvers.

PS Anders , you have an obvious gripe with VW cars . When was the last time you drove a GTi? What is opinion on the dull, un-inspiring and, in most cases, down right cheap interiors of Japanese and Koeran cars?

Evo this month Slated the V6 4Motion...
225bhp 4Motion Golf sure would kick tarmac better than the Pathetic 1.8T 150bhp - (Its not really a GTI anymore - lets face it)

Anders,
if you detest the VAG group..check this months EVO out..
the bit about the RS4 Audi - It lapped the Ring in 4 minutes 10 seconds - as quick as a Lambo Diablo!!

One major drawback with VW cars is the lack of standard equipment. On paper the car may appear competitively priced with other makes, like the Opel Astra, Ford Focus, Renault Megane etc. But when you actually see what you’re getting, or rather NOT getting for the basic price, it soon starts to loose appeal. Also, the VW brand doesn’t rate very well with reliability, but many people foolishly believe the reverse. In fact, in the most recent JD Power Car Quality survey, VW scored BELOW the industry average, and wasn’t even placed within the top 17!

Did you guys actually read what I wrote? The car is probably reasonably good in isolation but at the price the competition isn't exactly 1.4 litre Fords and Astras. I don't remember writing about Japanese cars either, I mentioned the BMW 323i. Most Japanese cars for that price would incidently be signficantly faster and probably better to drive too. And they won't break down. Kinda interesting that some recent survey in Germany found that the German based VAG brands produced much less reliable cars than Skoda and Seat.

Surely the Audi brand is there to carry this kind of car?

With Irelands crippling VRT system, I'd say that the 4Motion would be priced out of contention here, and I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if the importer decided not to bring it to market in this country. Besides, IMHO adding gizmos like 4 wheel drive just shows that the chassis can't handle the power. Why not just buy a properly balanced car that was designed from the ground up to use power like this in the first place?
