Guys,

The other half was pulled over by the gardai last night. Of course he wouldnt' just come right out and say why he stopped him, rather played a few guessing games beforehand. Anyway, as it turns out he didn't like the number plates (those italic ones, large and easy to read in my opinion), said that the likes of him were obviously trying to avoid being caught for speeding by having these hard to read plates. Didn't fine him on the spot but warned him that if he didn't change them he would be fined. I believe this guy cruises around the area and is likely to see him again.

Just wondering, what is the fine for having these plates??? And is it worth his while changing them? They were on the car when he got it so I assume he has to order the normal plates.

I'm not sure about the style of the writing on the plate, but this is the given guidelines for Irish reg plates, and the exact wording given on the Revenues site :

IT IS ILLEGAL TO DISPLAY A
REGISTRATION NUMBER OTHER THAT IN
THE FORMATS SHOWN BELOW

Maybe a quick call to either a Garda station or even a VRT office might shed some more light.

Speaking of fines, I unfortunately passed one of these on Friday, and lets just say I wasn't exactly sticking to the speed limit http://www.eforecourt.com/UBB/embarass.gif, but simply keeping up with the flow of traffic.

As there was a substantial gap between myself and the car in front, I suspect I've been nabbed :(. So my question is how long does it take to receive the fine and photo through the post? What is the actual fine, 50 squids?

As always, I suppose that the location of the Gatso van was located somewhere inappropriate as to maximise on speeding fines rather then to reduce fatalities at dangerous black spots.

As regards the style of writing on the reg plate, I don’t see why its such a problem. I would have imagined that the size of the letters would be the main problem here

Also, what of those drivers who have black reg plates with silver lettering, aren’t these much worse? And then I’ve also seen a few reg plates around that have a back reg plate with a yellow coloured background instead of the normal white. Obviously they visit the north frequently and want to blend in, but would these be illegal too? Does anyone sport one of these?
