I shipped in some products from the US and tried them out last weekend. Got some amazing results but still doing tests and I have an ideal car to act as Guinea Pig. The Girlfriend's 94 Astra! There were a few problems with the paintwork, namely a big ugly etch from bird-dropping which ate all the way through the paint (happened before I came along!) also lots of scratches and chip marks, with some key marks all around the lock on the drivers side. There are scratches on the roof from what looks like a manual brushing wash, and also a long scratch up the bonnet - this had to be from an drive-through Carwash.

The stuff I got in - No Names until after the test in two weeks - was a clay bar and a non-abrasive polish. The first thing I did though was give the car a "special" wash to get rid of the previous layers of wax that I had been putting on. After that, I used the clay bar to remove any dirt stuck to the surface of the paint. (Its the dirt that you can feel but not see). That gave a great finish anyway. The paint was really smooth to touch but what amazed me most was what it did to the etch on the roof. I could never get rid of that, even with hi-speed machine polishing. It always felt rough so I thought the damage was done and that was that. However, after running the clay bar over it a few times it went completely smooth. Okay, there was some paint missing and that was still obvious, but not half as obvious as before. That was pretty cool.

Next came the polish. Its an unusual product in that although its a polymer coating, its a bit more like a plastic and it fills in scratches and swirl marks, but you need to give it a few coats. I've done two coats so far and the car has never looked so good in all its life!! This stuff gives a big, glossy wet look to the paint as well so the car looks like its straight off the production line. I'm going to give it a few more coats when I get back as I can still see a scratch or two, but even the damge on the roof is far less visible. Amazing stuff.

I'll update you when I get back on the 8th of October!

Later,

Brian.

Brian, while we're on the subject do you know of any good cleaning product for chrome? As in motorcycle bits and pieces? Have some chrome (forks among other things) on the new bike that is quite dull and has not responded to the traditional soap 'n water.

Any more feedback on these new products Brian? Has the polish lasted long enough to be considered a good product? Is the shine still holding up compared to other brands currently available in Ireland?

I'm very interested in the clay bar. Does it help to remove the visibility of scratches? Does it work like a concealer, or does the scratch still remain as visible?

And lastly, how much can you supply them for? ;)

My apologies, folks. I have been up to my eyes and didn't get a chance to finish this off. The product I used is from a company called Zaino Bros, who specialize in show car polish. Its a high-end product and really gives a fantastic finish to the paint. But apart from Show Car owners, it has become really successful in the US because it gives a long lasting finish which is way more glossy and wet-looking than regular wax. I shipped in a couple of the products to try on the "Guinea Pig". One is a scratch-filling polish and the other is a clear-coat polish which gives the shine. They call it the "mile deep shine." The way it works is that you do a couple of layers of the filler to get a smooth surface and that allows for the maximum shine when you apply the clear-coat polish.

The clay bar that I ordered is the first one that I have used but its really good. Its about the size of half a bar of soap and basically you wipe it over the surface of the car, keeping it lubricated with 50/50 water + car shampoo mix. It takes off the ingrained dirt that an ordinary car wash won't remove. I mentioned somewhere before that you can only feel this dirt most of the time. Next time you wash your car, get something like a sandwich bag or cigarette pack wrapper and covering your fingers with the plastic, slide your finger-tips over the surface of the paint. It will feel rough. I did another test with this myself. After I washed the car, I put a £1 coin on the bonnet and it stayed there. After I clayed the car, the coin slid off all on its own. It was pretty good. Even just claying the surface made a big difference in the surface shine before putting any polish on it.

Also, this isn't polish in its traditional meaning. There are no abrasives in it - its just a product designed to bring a shine up. Its also not like other polishes or waxes I have tried. If you get some on plastic trim, it doesn't leave any white marks behind, or leave any residue in gaps. However, to get the maximum results from the polish, they need a single application of a cleaner / foundation to work best. Basically, you rub this on the car and then, no buffing of this initial layer, put the polish directly on top of it. This helps it bond to the paint and give a deeper shine.

All in all, a very good set of products. Easy to use - just wipe on, leave to set for 60 to 90 minutes, and then buff off with a soft cotton towel. What I am finding with it, is that the more I use it, the deeper the shine is. I have been put three coats of the filler polish and one coat of the Clear-Coat polish on the 94 Astra, and it looks better than ever. If it wasn't for a few bad marks on the drivers door (from its first owner) the car would look better than new. During the day, I have to admit, there is a wet-look to the paint. But at night, when it catches the orange street-light, it has a "honey" sort of shine on it. I'm impressed to hell with it.

What do you think? I'm giving 9 out of 10 because its better than anything I've tried before. Any questions, just let me know.
