View Full Version : Car Colours Fads

The one thing I cannot understand about new cars is the high level of silver ones being chosen by the Irish motorist. Every other new car you see on our roads now is silver. So its a fine colour to hide the dirt and scrapes, but its getting to a point where silver is just plain boring.
I've now started to witness a new colour fad though. I've seen quite a few new cars in Gold, for example the Seat Toledo and new BMW 3-series, and the numbers appear to be on the rise. I've a sneaky suspicion that its set to take over from silver as being the next big seller.
I have to agree. Its certainly getting it bit much at this stage. I'd imagine that when the time comes to sell, anyone that had enough brains to get a different colour will probably find that they can sell their car far easier than a similar model in silver. There will be so many silver cars in some models that it will surely effect the price of the cars to some extent. I can't comment on gold being the next colour fad, but I must keep an eye out over the next few days to see if you have a valid point.
So if anyone reading this is planning on purchasing a new car soon, please do yourself and the rest of us motorists a big favour and buy it in green/blue/red/black, basically any colour but silver.
Yip, silver cars are all over the place (including my own!), but it seems people cannot get enough of them. This is not an exclusively irish thing....UK buyers are buyig silver in huge numbers too. I guess advertising is a lot to do with it. When the Focus, ALfa 156, new Astra and Golf were launched, most of their ad's and brochures featured silver models - cars always look good in ads :)
Black seems to be making a bit of a comeback too recently.

My car is silver (Boxster) and I bought it secondhand, so I had to take the colour, but I quite like it. Also the Audi TT looks very well in silver. Sports cars in black or very dark colours seem a little insect like. Also, very small cars seem even smaller in black. I hope that putrid gold 3 series and Merc colour is a mere fad - terrible eyesores.
I actually like the look of the current BMW gold colour. At first it looks dreadful, but believe me it soon grows on you and its certainly a refreshing change to silver. I don't think I'd go for it myself though.
By the way, has anyone noticed the dramatic increase in red 156's?
Speaking of Boxsters, I noticed a green Porsche Boxster S the other day. The guy had the hood down and I must say that it certainly turned heads, including mine. I just had to turn down the music to listen the engine, and I have to say that it certainly does purr (or should that be 'growl'?) impressively. A fine machine indeed.

I've kept an eye out over the last few days and have noticed a fair few new gold coloured cars all right. It appears to be quite popular with Fiats (Seicento and Punto), Seat Toldeo, and also the Ford Focus. The shade of gold appears to be a good deal deeper then the metallic gold that was so popular a good few years ago.

Yeah i too have noticed alot of gold since this topic was started but the BMW colour is dreadful. http://www.eforecourt.com/UBB/sick.gif
I've also noticed alot of bigger cars in black lately, maybe its making a comeback.
The other thing about silver is its easy to keep clean, or at least it always looks clean and doesn't show up the chips as much.

I have to agree with you BeCos.
Any car with a gold colour, the driver should be taken out and shot. http://www.eforecourt.com/UBB/disgust.gif I think it stem's back to James Bond. You had 'Gold Finger', 'The man with the golden gun' and now you have 'the man with the golden car??' http://www.eforecourt.com/UBB/sick.gif , I don't think so.
So Tony I think the silver colour would be a better buy than a gold one.
