Hi,

I'm hoping that someone out there might have some information or advice for me regarding my motor insurance situation: I'm living in France right now, but I travel back home to Ireland a few times a year and need to be able to use the family car when I'm home. I am wondering what my coverage options are and is there some kind of temporary insurance coverage out there?

When I lived abroad before for a year I was insured as a named driver on my father's policy and this allowed me to drive the car whenever I was in Ireland. However the increase in premium wasn't worth it given the number of days I was actually in Ireland during the year.

Does anyone know of an alternative to paying for a full year's coverage given that I'll only be able to use the car maybe six weeks out of the whole year?

Thanks in advance for any help...

BB

BB, with the fast that it'll be 3 months, theres no point in renting a car IMHO.

The way I see it, you have only one choice - have yourself put on the main policy of the family car as a named driver. As far as I know, you cannot get your own insurance on it as you are not the owner. Unless you can come up with some sort of open policy.

Perhaps you should try and contact some of the Insurance companies here in Ireland. You can find their web sites listed here : http://www.eforecourt.com/links_insure_irish.htm

Hope this helps.

As far as I know.

If you have a 'Fully Comprehensive' insurance policy, you are aloud to drive another car third party fire on thief.

I would ask that first.

Thanks for the help guys.. I checked with one of the online insurance groups and they told me that some companies offer a 'temporary additional driver' option with their policy. So this looks like the perfect solution for me. I'm off to investigate further...

AFAIK, the option "open drive" costs about $20 per year and can be easily added to the policy of anyone of 'middle years' shall we say. This option covers all drivers over 25 with a full licence who may wish to use the car infrequently.

Alternatively I believe with some insurance companies you can add a named driver, again over 25 with a full licence, free of charge. I would be surprised to learn of an additional fee for this service. After all it's supposed to the based on the fact that the risk is very low.

Check it out!!
