OK, so they may not be the most exciting cars in the world, but they both sell quite well in Ireland.
The ad for the new Toyota Corolla boasts 'Feel the Quality'. So the new Corolla now attempts to match the Golf's build quality with damped grab handles and soft to touch plastics in the cabin.
So what about performance then? The base Corolla 1.4 VVTi has 97BHP, and does 0-62 in 12 seconds, the 1.6 has 109BHP, and does 0-62 in 10.2 seconds, while the 1.8 16v T Sport boasts 189BHP, and an acceleration 0-62 of 8.4 seconds.
The base VW Golf 1.4 has 75BHP, does 0-62 in 13.5 seconds (Ouch!), the 1.6 has 103BHP and does 0-62 in 12.9 seconds (double Ouch!). The current GTi has 150BHP and accelerates 0-62 in a comparative 8.5 seconds.
The T-Sport and Gti appear to be very close, but the base 1.4 and 1.6 has to go to the new Corolla, at least on paper anyways.
So which one is the better?
Bring on a head to head on one of the motoring TV programs I say!
